What is a SiC diode? SiC Diode (Silicon Carbide Diodes) is an electronic component used in today’s electronics with an increasing trend. The reason for this increase is that they work more efficiently especially in high voltage and high current applications. Many power supply manufacturers are replacing their traditional structures with SiC diode structures.
What is advantage of SiC diodes?
SiC diodes are not only more efficient. They also have higher switching performance and low forward voltage drop. They are less affected by surges due to their high voltage withstand.
Applications of SiC Diodes
Due to the above-mentioned advantages, SiC diodes are used in solar inverter systems, electric vehicle charging systems and high efficiency power supplies.
SiC Diodes specifications
SiC diodes have a much lower voltage drop than conventional diodes. Diodes emit heat depending on the voltage drop and the current flowing through them instantaneously. Therefore, low voltage drop value causes low heat generation on the diode. Thus, both the efficiency increases and the amount of heating in the entire system is reduced.
- Reverse voltage value is a very important parameter in the use of diodes. The higher the reverse voltage value of the diode to be used, the diode can operate at much higher voltage levels. SiC diodes have higher reverse voltage values than conventional P-N junction diodes.
- SiC diodes have a High Current Density. This means they can carry more power in a smaller area. Together, these features and the thermal characteristics of SiC diodes enable smaller and more compact designs.
- As mentioned earlier, SiC diodes emit much less heat. At the same time, their stability in high temperature environments is better than conventional diode structures. Therefore, their operating temperature ranges are higher than the aforementioned diodes.
What is the voltage of a SiC diode?
Due to the SiC material structure, SiC diodes can be manufactured at higher voltage levels than conventional diodes. This value may vary for each component, but today it can be found at values such as 600V, 1200V.
